Day 25

Treatment Number 9

Written by Alison Bell

Wednesday 11th April

Well a hectic day ensued :-

I turned up for my blood test at 9am and as soon as they had taken the blood, sat down in the waiting room and realized I was getting a migraine headache - not a good start to the day! So I begged some painkiller's and waited for the doctor's appointment.

I actually saw my oncologist this week and not a registrar or other doc. He was his usual blasé self, and did not seem concerned about the puffy ankles or my rash/itching. So I was dispatched with more Septrin, which I am now taking in small dose to prevent getting pneumonia this treatment will continue until the end of chemo, and a new batch of G-CSF injections looks like they are taking no chances. So back ache for the rest of treatment!

Duly dispatched I headed off to collect my pager and wander about until my chemo drugs arrived, when it went off 20 mins later I was surprised. I was then sent to have a CT scan and a chest x ray! Seemingly they do a scan at this point usually and they had missed mine, and luckily squeezed me in today, which is fab as it means I got it all done in one day.

I also had my second interview with the psychologist for the clinical trial on the aromatherapy massage, and he arrived just as I was getting my chemo so we sloped off to a private room and went through the questionnaire again, unfortunately he seems to catch me at moments of crisis in my personal life - purely coincidental, but I don't know how it will affect the outcome of the trial.

One of the nurses asked me to show a new patient my Hickman Line to help out. It was weird to look into the face of someone to whom the Hodgkin's Journey is just starting - recognizing the vague look of receiving huge amounts of information and being unable to let it sink in. She's going to go for the line so I feel quite good about being able to help.

I met a nice woman too while waiting for my scan who's son has had treatment for an incredibly rare type of cancer, which my oncologist discovered. Makes one feel a little comforted being treated by such a clever guy, even if he does find you boring in comparison! She was great but couldn't talk in front of her son as he hates talking about his illness. So interesting how different people react in so many ways.

I have been lax again in my visualizations. I'm not going to do any today.  I'm tired from the hospital and having had a migraine feel I should just relax and rest. I will do a relaxation session of breathing and loosening the muscles.

Only three treatments to go.  I'm hoping the CT Scan was good and that will be the end of it.
