Treatment Number 7

Alison's Terrifying
Hospital Stay
Part 2

Thursday 15th March

Thursday afternoon - still a little shaky.

I was started on Septrin for treatment of PCP through an IV drip and Prednizone a steroid for treatment of the Bleomycin damage.

I was hoping to go home on the Friday, hoping being a great understatement you understand, but to no avail.  My Onc (actually the one I like seeing all the time but never get to see 'cause I'm just a boring easy patient that his minions deal with!!) told me I was only staying in 'cause of the drip and the Septrin could make me sick. So he'd see me on Monday and hopefully have some results. Goodbye ! Mmmmmm.

Actually, he also told me that in Australia before he could perform a Broncoscopy on a patient he would have to experience one himself.  I'm petitioning parliament to make that law for all such procedures. and can I stick the needle in the guy who did me?!

So I spent the weekend in hosp too, and on Sunday was feeling a little off color probably severe lack of sleep from being in the hospital - what with snoring, incredible flatulence and burping and nurses banging things, I felt, excessively I didn't really get more than 2 or 3 hours a night. I'm now exhausted on top of the infection!

We got the result of the Broncoscopy wash not the biopsy on Sunday too which did not show infection - a disappointment - still hoping for that potentially fatal disease!!

The other news I got from the nurse on her drug rounds is that Septrin comes in tablet form too.  So Monday:

7am - packed bags in readiness for release!

8am - nurse laughed and said "Wishful packing?"

9am - overheard in the corridor, 6 different people independently telling the doctor I wanted to go home today.

11 am - much umming and ahhing, released around 3.30pm Yipppeeee!

I'm rattling with all the drugs and have to say having had treatment number 7.  I'm feeling pretty weird.

They have now cut the Bleomycin from my chemo regime, a decision, though a relief considering the long term damage it can cause, that worries me slightly as I wonder about the effectiveness of the treatment overall.

My blood counts are ridiculously high, which I think is due to the Septrin.  So I will be visualizing a healthy chest, including willing it smaller! - instead of counts!  This is great though hopefully there will be enough to battle the chemo and still have enough for next time.
